Dr Mehdi Serati is the Director of Research at UQ’s School of Civil Engineering and has been the Deputy Manager of the international Large Open Pit project since 2016. He earned his PhD in Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering from The University of Queensland (UQ) in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr Serati’s primary research focus is rock fracture mechanics, integrating both theoretical and experimental approaches. He has led several national and international research projects on (i) Thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of brittle solids under high stresses and elevated temperatures, (ii) Design and execution of advanced experiments on various brittle materials, including pavements, brittle composites, ceramics, hard rocks, and ultra-hard diamond composites, (iii) Solid waste recycling in the construction and excavation industries, and (iv) Materials testing and modelling of rock breakage under heterogeneous loading conditions.
