BIO

Distinguished Professor Lin Schwarzkopf is an ecologist at James Cook University, recognized for her research on the interactions between animals and their habitats in the face of environmental change. She earned her PhD from the University of Sydney in 1991 and has been a professor at JCU since 2012. Her work explores the complex effects of anthropogenic impacts and land use change on biodiversity. Her research has demonstrated that reptile species characteristic of lowland rainforests can persist in modified landscapes such as pine plantations, reshaping our understanding of habitat use and resilience. Her studies on grazing strategies have demonstrated how economically sustainable agricultural practices can enhance biodiversity, fostering productive collaboration between conservationists and agriculturalists.

More recently, she has turned her focus to automated methods for biodiversity assessment, particularly through ecoacoustics, to enable large-scale and efficient monitoring of animal populations. As solar farms expand to meet global energy demands, her work is helping to unravel their potential impacts on biodiversity, ensuring that renewable energy development aligns with ecological sustainability. Through her research, Professor Schwarzkopf continues to bridge the gap between conservation science and practical land management, informing policies that balance economic viability with environmental stewardship
