Why

Queensland’s key sectors of industry will undergo significant change over the coming decades with both risks and opportunities presented. Communities, companies and other entities in these sectors need clarity on potential pathways to decarbonisation to enable planning and to develop strategies to not just survive but thrive in a decarbonised economy.

Successfully developed plans, informed by best available evidence, are a significant step towards derisking the transition. By understanding the change required, Queensland can work to minimise unintended consequences which may arise without sufficient planning and foresight.

Approach

There is power in the collective.

A multidisciplinary network of researchers, combined with significant knowledge and skills within government and industry can support the creation of the sector plans. The Hub will support the knowledge exchange within this network including State and Federal government. Initially, the work will:

  • Examine government and sector support needs for decarbonisation planning
  • Identify Hub stakeholders who can assist in bridging knowledge gaps
  • Facilitate the design of targeted research projects to address these needs and build industry-research partnerships
  • Inform policy and strategic planning
  • Support the development of transition pathways

Aims

  • Inform and support the Queensland Government’s development of sector emission reduction plans, as defined in Section 3 of the Clean Economy Jobs Act 2024
  • Support Queensland Government to overcome challenges to sector plan development
  • Identify R&D requirements to enable sector planning and transitions
  • Match capabilities from within the Hub community to transition planning and sector decarbonisation issues

Projects

  1. Queensland Treasury Project - provide an overview of abatement technology pathways for each sector with a strong focus on the Queensland context.
  2. Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development Project - support the development of sectoral emission reduction pathway planning for the resources sector.
