Why

Queensland’s key sectors of industry will undergo significant change over the coming decades with both risks and opportunities presented. Communities, companies and other entities in these sectors need clarity on potential pathways to decarbonisation to enable planning and to develop strategies to not just survive but thrive in a decarbonised economy.

Successfully developed plans, informed by best available evidence, are a significant step towards derisking the transition. By understanding the change required, Queensland can work to minimise unintended consequences which may arise without sufficient planning and foresight.

Approach

The Hub brings together researchers, government, and industry to share knowledge and skills. By working across disciplines and sectors, we’re building a clearer picture of Queensland’s decarbonisation opportunities and challenges. Initially, the work will:

  • Explore what’s needed for effective sector decarbonisation planning, aligned to the Queensland Government’s sector emissions reduction plans and with a particular focus on technology pathways
  • Map the Hub’s stakeholders and connect them to close knowledge gaps
  • Help design targeted research projects that build strong industry–research partnerships
  • Support the development of practical transition pathways

Aims

  • Develop an overview of abatement technology pathways for each economic sector in Queensland with a strong focus on the local context, to support the transition to net zero
  • Identify R&D requirements to enable sector emissions reduction plans and transitions
  • Match capabilities from within the Hub community to transition planning and sector decarbonisation issues

Projects

  1. Develop an overview of abatement technology pathways for sectors in Queensland
